Joyce Manor squeeze nine songs into barely nineteen minutes on I Used to Go to This Bar, their seventh studio album and one of the tightest records in an already lean catalogue.

Their first full-length since 40 oz. to Fresno was produced by Brett Gurewitz, the Bad Religion co-founder who started Epitaph, and his steady hand is all over it. Barry Johnson reworked these songs through demo after demo at home, and the sessions moved between studios around Los Angeles, with Joey Waronker among the drummers who sat in.

What comes out is punk with the windows rolled down. Harmonica, jangling guitars and flashes of cowpunk and power-pop crowd into the margins, while Johnson sketches suburban LA life, money worries and the slow fade of old haunts. All My Friends Are So Depressed became the band's first radio hit, and Well, Whatever It Was snaps along on a melody that sticks after one listen.

Opener I Know Where Mark Chen Lives sets the pace in under two minutes, and nothing that follows outstays its welcome.

The album is dedicated to Brian Wilson, a fitting tribute from a band that has always cared about melody as much as noise. It is short, sharp and over just as you reach to flip it again.
