Released in 1980, two months after Ian Curtis's death, Joy Division's Closer arrives here on 180 gram vinyl, and it remains one of the most haunting final statements in rock.

Recorded in London with producer Martin Hannett, the album pushed the band far beyond the raw post-punk of Unknown Pleasures into colder, more spacious territory. Synthesisers, echoing drums and Peter Hook's melodic bass lines create an atmosphere that feels claustrophobic and strangely beautiful at once, a sound that would shape goth, indie and the New Order records that followed.

"Atrocity Exhibition" opens the record with jagged, disorienting guitar and Curtis intoning his invitation like a ringmaster, while "Isolation" pairs a driving synth pulse with some of his most exposed lyrics. "Heart and Soul" drifts on a hypnotic, tribal rhythm, and the closing "Decades" slows everything to a funereal crawl that is almost unbearably moving.

Stephen Morris's drumming and Bernard Sumner's guitar and keyboards are given equal weight to the vocals, and Hannett's production makes every element feel suspended in the air. Nothing here is rushed, and nothing is wasted, which is why the album still sounds so modern and so unsettling.

More than four decades on, it still demands to be heard from start to finish, ideally with the lights low and the volume up.
