Mingus is Joni Mitchell's boldest leap into jazz, a 1979 collaboration with the great bassist and composer Charles Mingus, presented here in a remastered pressing.
Mingus wrote six new melodies for Mitchell to set words to, and three made the final album. He was in the late stages of ALS and unable to play, and he died in January 1979, so the record was completed in the months around his death and is wholly dedicated to him. It was her tenth studio album and her last for Asylum Records.
Mitchell surrounded herself with an extraordinary band: Jaco Pastorius on bass, Wayne Shorter on saxophone, Herbie Hancock on electric piano, Peter Erskine on drums, and Don Alias and Emil Richards on percussion. "God Must Be a Boogie Man" is all Mitchell, wry and playful over Pastorius's singing bass, and "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" gives Mingus's tribute to Lester Young haunting new lyrics. "The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines" swings with comic relish, while "A Chair in the Sky" drifts somewhere between ballad and dream.
Short spoken-word interludes weave between the songs, giving the album the feel of a private scrapbook. It puzzled some listeners on release, yet it now stands as one of the most adventurous records any singer-songwriter has made.
