Hejira is Joni Mitchell's great road album, a restless, shimmering 1976 masterpiece presented here in a remastered pressing.

Written largely on long drives across America, the album finds Mitchell moving away from the polished pop of Court and Spark toward something looser and more searching. She produced it herself, leaving plenty of air around her voice. Long, conversational melodies unspool over her open-tuned guitar, and the songs read like letters written from motel rooms and highway shoulders, full of wanderlust, solitude and hard-won self-knowledge.

Jaco Pastorius's fretless bass is the album's secret weapon, singing and sliding beneath "Coyote" like a second voice, and Larry Carlton's guitar adds its own glowing color across the record. "Amelia" addresses the aviator Amelia Earhart in one of Mitchell's most haunting meditations on freedom and loneliness, while "Refuge of the Roads" closes the record with quiet, wide-open grace. Neil Young even drops by on harmonica for "Furry Sings the Blues", a portrait of an old Memphis bluesman.

In this remastered pressing, every guitar shimmer and bass slide comes through with real presence. It is the kind of record that keeps revealing new details on the hundredth spin, and many fans count it as her finest hour, a claim that is hard to argue with.
