Next In Line gathers Johnny Cash's early country hits from 1955 to 1959, the years that turned a Memphis newcomer into a star.

Most of these sides come from his time at Sun Records, where Cash and the Tennessee Two, guitarist Luther Perkins and bassist Marshall Grant, built that spare boom-chicka-boom sound out of a few chords and sheer conviction. The collection then follows him through his move to Columbia, as his storytelling grew broader and his records began reaching listeners well beyond the country charts.

I Walk the Line is here in all its humming, key-shifting glory, alongside Big River, a rollicking travelogue with one of his sharpest lyrics. Ballad of a Teenage Queen shows the lighter, poppier side Sun pushed in 1958, and Don't Take Your Guns to Town, from his early Columbia days, is a cowboy morality tale delivered with a straight face and a heavy heart. Even the deeper cuts carry that unmistakable voice, low and steady and already sounding older than its years.

With 18 tracks on a single LP, it is a compact, tightly packed snapshot of Cash's first great run, and the foundation for everything that came later, from the prison concerts to the American Recordings.
