Hello, I'm Johnny Cash catches the Man in Black at a commercial high, here on limited 180-gram blue vinyl in a gatefold jacket, imported from Holland.

Borrowing his famous stage greeting for its title, it was released in 1970, hot on the heels of the career-reviving prison albums, while his television show was turning him into a household name. Producer Bob Johnston kept the arrangements lean, and Cash used the space to mix his own songs with material from writers he admired, including Roy Orbison, Tim Hardin and a then little-known Kris Kristofferson.

If I Were a Carpenter, his duet with June Carter, turns Hardin's folk song into a warm conversation between husband and wife. See Ruby Fall, which Cash co-wrote with Orbison, and Blistered, a Billy Edd Wheeler number, were paired on a double A-side single that showed off both his tender and his playful sides. Kristofferson's To Beat the Devil gets one of the album's most intimate readings, Cash sounding weathered and patient as he leans into the story.

It is a confident, generous record from an artist clearly enjoying the moment, and it shows Cash as a sharp interpreter of other people's songs as well as a writer of his own. The blue vinyl adds a striking twist to a country classic.
