Before sharks and starships made him the most famous composer in Hollywood, John Williams wrote one of the great western scores for The Cowboys, presented here as an anniversary edition across two gold LPs.
The 1972 film, directed by Mark Rydell, put John Wayne in the role of a rancher who loses his hands to a gold rush and hires a crew of schoolboys to drive his herd to market. It is a coming-of-age story dressed in dust and leather, and Williams answered it with music that is wide open, generous and full of youthful nerve, a few years before Jaws and Star Wars rewrote his career.
The Overture is the calling card, a bright, galloping piece built on brassy fanfares that has since become a favourite in concert halls. The Main Title sets the tone with sweeping Americana, while Learning The Ropes captures the boys' first clumsy days in the saddle with playful, bustling orchestration that never loses its sense of scale.
Western scores rarely get this much warmth or this much swagger, even from the genre's greats. For collectors tracing Williams back to his pre-blockbuster years, this gold pressing shows a composer already thinking in widescreen, with themes big enough to fill a prairie.
