John Williams cracked the whip once more in 2008 with his score for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, presented here as a limited UK import on bronze double vinyl.
Nineteen years after The Last Crusade, Steven Spielberg brought Harrison Ford back for a fourth adventure, now set in the 1950s with Cold War villains and a mysterious crystal skull. Williams composed and conducted the music, folding his famous themes into fresh material for Indy's son Mutt and the steely Soviet agent Irina Spalko.
Raiders March blazes in right on cue, as rousing as ever, a reminder of how completely that melody defines the character. The Adventures of Mutt swaggers along with a jaunty, motorbike-ready theme, Irina's Theme stalks in with cool menace, and Call of the Crystal shimmers with eerie, otherworldly mystery. Elsewhere, the action cues race through jungles, temples and ant-infested ruins at full orchestral gallop.
Williams writes for the orchestra like a master storyteller, and every brass fanfare and string flourish feels perfectly timed. It plays like a thrilling ride from first cue to last.
For fans of the franchise and lovers of big, old-fashioned adventure scoring, this is a treasure worth digging up, and the bronze pressing makes a fitting home for it.
