Steven Spielberg's 1991 film imagined a grown-up Peter Pan, played by Robin Williams, drawn back to Neverland to face Dustin Hoffman's Captain Hook. For Williams, a longtime Spielberg collaborator, it was a chance to write in the grand tradition of classic Hollywood adventure, and he seized it with sweeping themes, glittering orchestration and more than a hint of stage-musical sparkle.

Prologue sets the scene with a gentle, storybook opening before the orchestra begins to swell. Hook-Napped brings in the shadows as the villain makes his move, low brass and tense strings tightening the screws. Remembering Childhood finds tender, nostalgic warmth in the main theme, and The Ultimate War is all brassy, rollicking swordplay, the full orchestra charging across the deck with obvious relish.

Film music fans often single out Hook as a hidden treasure in the Williams catalogue, a score richer and more inventive than the film's mixed reception might suggest. Spread across four sides, it is a pleasure to hear at length, with its big flying themes given plenty of space, and it makes a welcome addition to any shelf of great film music.
