Tupelo Blues strips John Lee Hooker down to his voice and an acoustic guitar, a 1959 session aimed squarely at the folk-blues crowd. This limited Spanish import is pressed on 180 gram vinyl with bonus tracks.
By then Hooker was a seasoned jukebox star, known for his driving electric boogie records, but this album was his first LP pitched at the growing audience for traditional country blues. He set the amplifier aside and dug deep into older material, some his own and some drawn from the wider blues tradition, singing straight from the bone.
The title song is the emotional anchor, a haunting account of a flood in Tupelo, Mississippi, delivered with quiet, chilling gravity. How Long Blues reworks the Leroy Carr standard in his own brooding style, Black Snake creeps along with slow menace, and Pea Vine Special rolls with a steady, train-like rhythm.
Without a band around him, every rhythmic shift and moan feels intensely personal, and his hypnotic guitar figures carry the songs with remarkable force.
It is intimate, raw and deeply soulful, and it shows exactly why Hooker remained one of the most distinctive voices in American music. Blues fans will find a different side of a legend here.
