Few bluesmen enjoyed a third act like John Lee Hooker's, and Boom Boom, released in 1992, rides that late-career wave with the swagger of a man who had nothing left to prove.

The Healer had returned him to the charts in 1989, and Mr. Lucky kept the momentum rolling, both built around famous admirers lining up to play with him. Boom Boom keeps a little of that spirit while putting Hooker himself firmly in the spotlight, his voice deeper and more weathered than ever and his guitar still locked into the hypnotic, foot-tapping pulse that nobody else could quite copy.

The title track is a fresh recording of his 1962 classic, with Texas guitarist Jimmie Vaughan adding tasty, stinging licks to a groove that still gets rooms moving. "I'm Bad Like Jesse James" is a menacing, slow-burning outlaw tale, while "Boogie at Russian Hill" lets him stretch out on the boogie style that made his name. "Same Old Blues Again" sinks into a deep, unhurried mood.

Across the album, the band leaves plenty of space, letting the grain of his voice carry every line and every pause.

For blues collectors, it is a warm reminder of how gloriously Hooker aged, and of how little he ever needed to say to say everything.
