Few rock debuts are as raw or as revealing as John Frusciante's Niandra LaDes and Usually Just a T-Shirt, laid out here across two LPs.
Frusciante had joined the Red Hot Chili Peppers as a teenager, but after the enormous success of Blood Sugar Sex Magik he walked away from the band in 1992, overwhelmed by sudden fame. Much of the first half of this album took shape during the Blood Sugar sessions, when he spent spare hours alone recording his own songs. Friends urged him to release the material, and it finally appeared in 1994, recorded on an inexpensive four-track with guitar, piano and effects.
The Niandra LaDes half gathers proper songs, fragile and bent out of shape, with As Can Be, My Smile Is a Rifle and Running Away Into You drifting between hushed acoustic picking, warped overdubs and vocals that sound as if they were captured in the small hours. The second half, Usually Just a T-Shirt, is a run of thirteen untitled pieces, sketches that flicker between beauty and unease.
It confused many listeners on release and has only grown in stature since.
Frusciante went on to rejoin the Chili Peppers later in the decade, but this remains the purest window into his restless creative mind.
