Curiosities From the Shift is Joe Westerlund's boldest solo statement yet, a drummer's record that opens outward instead of turning inward.
Westerlund spent half a decade obsessed with clave, the rhythmic cell that shaped Afro-Cuban music before quietly seeping into jazz, rock, and everything after. What fascinated him was its flexibility, the way it could bend into any shape and still hold its own character. These twelve tracks are what happened when that obsession met his taste for texture and happy accident.
The opening three-song suite sets the terms, moving from the junkyard percussion and bass splashes of "Tem" to the surreal thumb-piano boom-bap of "Can Tangle." Elsewhere, "Midpoint" struts along beneath shimmering metallophones, chattering birds, and flutes that seem to wander off mid-thought, while "Persurverance" - misspelled to match his North Carolina-via-Wisconsin drawl - threads dub delays through gamelan hymns. Friends including Sam Gendel, Tim Rutili, Trever Hagen, and violinists Libby Rodenbough and Chris Jusell respond to his most tightly composed writing in real time, prying open recesses he had not noticed himself.
Across this 2LP set, groove and abstraction stop arguing and start collaborating. Bittersweet and buoyant at once, it is the sound of a musician surprised by his own record, and generous enough to let you hear that surprise.
