Joe Hisaishi revisits his music for Hayao Miyazaki's The Boy and the Heron on this single LP, reshaping the film's score into a self-contained symphonic suite for piano and orchestra.
Rather than stringing together scene-by-scene cues, the suite follows its own dramatic arc, with the solo piano and the orchestra trading lines like two characters in conversation. Hisaishi conducts and plays the piano part himself alongside the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, where he holds the title of Composer-in-Association, and the work was first performed in Japan before a European premiere at the BBC Proms in 2025. The film it springs from, released in 2023, went on to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
Across fourteen sections, the suite traces the story from Ask Me Why (I) through Gray Heron, Warawara and The Great Collapse, before Ask Me Why (II) brings the opening idea full circle. Hisaishi's gift for melody, honed across four decades of Studio Ghibli collaborations, keeps the piano writing lyrical even as the full orchestra swells around it.
For anyone who has ever hummed a Ghibli theme on the walk home, this is a rare chance to hear one of the great film composers rethink his own material for the concert hall. It rewards patient, attentive listening from the first note to the last.
