Joe Hisaishi steps onto the podium for Joe Hisaishi Conducts, a live double LP pairing his own The End of the World with Steve Reich's The Desert Music.

Recorded at Tokyo's Suntory Hall in 2024, the concert features Future Orchestra Classics, the young ensemble Hisaishi founded, alongside The Philharmonic Chorus of Tokyo and soprano Ella Taylor. It also gave The Desert Music its Japanese premiere, a fitting tribute from a composer whose own concert music grew out of minimalism.

Reich's piece sets lines by the poet William Carlos Williams for amplified voices and orchestra, its pulsing patterns shadowed by thoughts of the desert where the first atomic bomb was tested. Across five movements, insistent rhythms swell, interlock and then dissolve into a strange, luminous stillness.

Hisaishi's own work was born after he stood at Ground Zero in New York. Collapse opens with real force, Grace of the St. Paul honours the chapel that sheltered rescue workers, and Beyond the World lifts the chorus toward something close to hope, before a recomposed version of the Skeeter Davis classic The End of the World closes the evening.

Far from the Studio Ghibli scores that made him famous, this is Hisaishi at his most searching, and four sides give both works the space they need.
