Joe Hisaishi, the composer behind so many beloved Studio Ghibli scores, brings his gift for wistful melody to Kogonada's 2025 romantic fantasy A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, gathered here across two LPs.
The film follows two strangers, played by Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell, who step through mysterious doors into moments from their own pasts. It's a premise built for Hisaishi, whose music has always lived where childhood memory and adult heartache meet. His score favours piano-led themes and sweeping strings, shifting between bittersweet reflection and gently swelling romance without tipping into syrup.
Cues like "Rain" and "The Lighthouse" set the tone early, unfolding with the patient, singing lines his admirers will recognise instantly, while the title theme gathers the score's emotional threads into something luminous. The second record turns to song. Laufey contributes several performances, including "The Risk" and her readings of classic standards, and Mitski covers Pete Townshend's "Let My Love Open the Door", bringing a different kind of yearning to the closing stretch.
The result plays as a complete listening experience rather than a collection of cues, moving from instrumental reverie to late-night vocal warmth. For collectors of Hisaishi's film work, it's a welcome new chapter, and a lovely companion to a film that rewards a second look.
