With a Little Help from My Friends is the debut that turned a Sheffield pipe fitter into one of rock's most singular voices, gold certified and now reissued to mark his 2025 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Cocker took Lennon and McCartney's genial Sgt. Pepper's sing-along and completely rebuilt it, stretching the melody into something raw and gospel-inflected, his rasping delivery turning a song about getting by with friends into something closer to genuine desperation. Jimmy Page contributed both the arrangement and guitar work on that title track, one of several serious session credits scattered across a record that arrived just months before Cocker's Woodstock performance made his interpretation of the Beatles song genuinely iconic in its own right.
Feelin' Alright is the other song that made his name, Dave Mason's original completely transformed by Cocker's grit and the Grease Band's muscular backing. His cover of Bob Dylan's Just Like a Woman strips away the original's folk delicacy for something rougher and more physical. With a Little Help from My Friends closes the record as the definitive statement, the version that made the song belong to Cocker as much as it ever belonged to the Beatles.
A debut that announced one of rock's great interpretive voices before most people had any idea who he was. The Hall of Fame recognition only confirms what this record already proved.
