Jodeci closed their imperial run with The Show, The After Party, The Hotel, a 1995 concept album following one long night from stage to room key, here on 2LP.
By the mid-90s, the four from North Carolina (K-Ci, JoJo, DeVante Swing and Mr. Dalvin) had become the bad boys of R&B, gospel-trained voices wrapped in leather and hip-hop swagger. Their third album leaned all the way into that persona. DeVante Swing steered the production, and the sequencing tells a story, with numbered "Room" interludes stitching the evening together.
The concert opens everything with "The Show," then the party half heats up before the hotel section turns to slow, smoky seduction. "Freek'n You" is the centerpiece, a velvet groove that still sounds like two in the morning, while "Love U 4 Life" lets K-Ci's voice stretch to full church-trained power. "Get On Up" keeps the funk moving when the lights are still on.
Spread across two discs, the album has room to breathe, so the transitions land the way they were meant to, scene by scene, door by door.
It was also the last Jodeci album for twenty years, which makes it feel even more like a curtain call. For anyone who loves 90s R&B at its most sultry and theatrical, this is the night to relive.
