Few debuts pointed R&B in a new direction as boldly as Jodeci's Forever My Lady, and this 35th anniversary edition spreads the 1991 classic across two LPs.
Two sets of brothers from North Carolina, K-Ci and JoJo Hailey alongside DeVante Swing and Mr. Dalvin, Jodeci took church-trained harmonies and gave them a street-level edge. Where much of the era's R&B was polished and buttoned-up, they brought hip-hop swagger and gospel fire to the same record, and the formula helped define the sound of the decade.
DeVante Swing produced most of the album, with Al B. Sure! sharing executive producer duties, and the arrangements leave plenty of room for those voices to soar. The title track "Forever My Lady" is a tender, slow-burning ballad, while "Stay" pairs aching vocals with a deep, unhurried groove. "Come and Talk to Me" became a signature, its pleading harmonies still a fixture of slow-jam playlists, and "I'm Still Waiting" closes out a remarkable run of singles with real vulnerability.
Three decades on, the influence of Forever My Lady can be heard in generations of R&B groups and solo singers who borrowed its blend of sanctified vocals and bravado.
This anniversary pressing honors the record that started it all for one of the genre's great vocal groups.
