Joan Jett's Bad Reputation returns as a 45th anniversary reissue, the scrappy, defiant solo debut that announced her as a rock force on her own terms.

After The Runaways split, Jett teamed up with producers Kenny Laguna and Ritchie Cordell and made a record first issued under her own name in 1980, then retitled Bad Reputation in 1981. The new title was a direct answer to the reputation that had followed her from her teenage band, and the songs treat that baggage as fuel rather than a burden, sneering at critics with a grin.

The title track is the mission statement, under three minutes of snarling, take-it-or-leave-it attitude. "Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah)" turns glam stomp into pure fun, while her take on "You Don't Own Me," recorded with Sex Pistols members Steve Jones and Paul Cook, makes a 1960s anthem tougher and more personal. A raucous cover of "Wooly Bully" keeps the party going.

The production keeps everything lean and loud, with crunchy guitars and handclap-ready choruses that point straight toward the arena-sized success she found soon after with the Blackhearts.

It is essential punk-pop history, a blueprint for generations of rockers who followed, and still a perfect soundtrack for anyone who refuses to play nice.
