Jim Croce's I Got A Name returns in its 2023 mix, a bittersweet farewell from one of the warmest storytellers of the 1970s.
The album arrived in 1973, only months after Croce was killed in a plane crash alongside his friend and guitar partner Maury Muehleisen. That timing gives every song an extra ache, yet the record itself is anything but gloomy. Produced by Terry Cashman and Tommy West, it captures Croce at the height of his powers, balancing tender ballads with the wry, character-driven songs that made him a fixture on the radio.
The title track, written for the film The Last American Hero, is a stirring anthem of self-belief carried by rolling acoustic guitars and a soaring chorus. "I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song" is pure romance, delivered with disarming simplicity, while "Workin' at the Car Wash Blues" shows off his gift for comic storytelling, its hapless narrator dreaming far beyond his station.
"Lover's Cross" adds a gentle, melancholy turn, the interplay between Croce's and Muehleisen's guitars as intimate as ever.
The new mix offers a fresh way into those beautifully played acoustic arrangements, and it makes a lovely way to revisit an album that still feels like a conversation with an old friend.
