Jethro Tull's Aqualung gets a fresh coat of polish on this 180-gram LP, which presents Steven Wilson's acclaimed remix of the band's 1971 classic.
The original album has always been a landmark, a blend of hard rock, folk and pointed social commentary that made Ian Anderson's flute one of rock's least likely signature sounds. Its first side sketches a gallery of outsiders, while the second takes aim at organised religion, though Anderson always resisted calling it a concept album.
Wilson's remix, first issued for the album's 40th anniversary, set out to fix the murky sound of the original and bring every instrument into focus. Martin Barre's guitar on the title track now hits with real weight, "Cross-Eyed Mary" struts with new clarity, and the acoustic "Wond'ring Aloud" sounds intimate enough to be in the room. "Locomotive Breath" builds from its rolling piano intro into a runaway train of a rocker.
The difference is most striking in the quieter moments, where acoustic guitars, piano and Anderson's voice gain a presence the original mix sometimes buried.
For longtime fans this is a revelation, and for newcomers it is the best way to hear why Aqualung still looms so large over British rock. Few remixes have done more to change how a classic album is heard.
