Dragon Fly is where Jefferson Starship took flight as a full band, a 1974 debut of cosmic rock and soaring harmonies, pressed on blue vinyl with bonus tracks added.

Grace Slick and Paul Kantner built the lineup from the remains of Jefferson Airplane, with David Freiberg, Papa John Creach on electric violin, Pete Sears, drummer John Barbata and a young guitarist named Craig Chaquico. Recorded at Wally Heider Studios in San Francisco and produced by the band with Larry Cox, it went gold and set the template for the Starship's run through the rest of the decade.

Ride the Tiger opens with a muscular, hard-charging groove, while Hyperdrive closes on a sprawling, Slick-penned epic that lives up to its name. The real treasure is Caroline, a seven-minute slow burn featuring Marty Balin on lead vocals, his first appearance on an Airplane-family record since 1969. It became an FM radio staple and paved the way for his return to the fold.

Devil's Den lets Creach's violin snarl and dance, and Slick's sly, theatrical streak runs through the whole record, keeping the cosmic grandeur from ever feeling too earnest.

For fans of San Francisco rock in its spacier, more polished era, this blue pressing is a sweet way to hear a band find its wings.
