Volunteers is Jefferson Airplane at their most political and most ragged, the 1969 album that closed out the decade with a call to the barricades, here on limited blue 180-gram vinyl.

Two years after Surrealistic Pillow made them stars, the San Francisco band had grown louder, angrier and far less interested in radio. With the Vietnam War raging, they wrote songs that took direct aim at the establishment, and the lyrics stirred real controversy at the time. The album was also one of the first recorded on a sixteen-track machine, and friends including Stephen Stills and David Crosby joined the sessions.

"We Can Be Together" opens with a defiant, communal roar, the band's voices locked together on lines that still sound bracing. "Wooden Ships", co-written by Paul Kantner with Crosby and Stills, imagines survivors drifting away from a ruined world, and the closing title track is a rallying cry with a chorus made for marching. "Good Shepherd" offers a gentler moment, a traditional song reshaped into a hazy folk lament.

It would be the last studio album from the band's classic lineup, which gives it an extra charge for fans of the era.

As a limited Dutch import, this pressing is a vivid way to hear San Francisco rock at its most urgent.
