Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk is the unfinished second album Jeff Buckley left behind, gathered here as a 3LP Canadian import.

Released in 1998, a year after his death, it collects two very different visions of the follow-up to Grace. The first is a set of full-band sessions with Television's Tom Verlaine producing, songs Buckley later set aside as he searched for a rawer direction. The second gathers the four-track demos he was making in Memphis in 1997, intimate and unvarnished, still caught mid-thought.

Even half-formed, the songs are extraordinary. "The Sky Is a Landfill" opens the set with jagged, angry guitar, while "Everybody Here Wants You" is a slow-burning soul ballad, all falsetto and late-night longing. "Nightmares by the Sea" swirls with menace and romance, and "Morning Theft" is a hushed, heartbreaking farewell, among the most tender things Buckley ever recorded.

Listening now is bittersweet, a glimpse of where Buckley was headed and a reminder of how much was lost. Spread across three discs, the polished sessions and the rough demos each get room to stand on their own, and the contrast between them tells a story all of its own. It is a vital companion to Grace and a moving portrait of an artist in motion.
