JAY-Z had to start his own label just to get his debut heard, and Reasonable Doubt repaid the gamble many times over, presented here on double vinyl.

Released in 1996, the album came out through Roc-A-Fella, the company he founded with Damon Dash and Kareem Burke after years of selling tapes out of his car. The hustler's life is the subject, but the treatment is anything but flashy: ambition, paranoia and regret sit side by side, and he later likened the studio to a psychiatrist's couch. Its cool, cinematic realism helped tilt East Coast rap toward mafioso storytelling.

The production credits read like a map of mid-1990s New York. Knobody's Can't Knock the Hustle pairs JAY's effortless flow with Mary J. Blige over silky jazz-funk. Ski builds Dead Presidents II around a hook lifted from Nas's own voice, Clark Kent supplies the bounce for Brooklyn's Finest, a dazzling back-and-forth with The Notorious B.I.G., and DJ Premier's shadowy D'Evils is as dark as the album gets.

Many listeners still rank it as his finest work, ahead of the blockbusters that followed, and it is easy to hear why. Every verse feels carefully weighed and every beat leaves room to breathe. Thirty years on, few debuts sound this fully formed.
