Unfun is where Jawbreaker first got loud and literate at the same time, a 1990 debut that sounds like three friends discovering how much feeling a power trio can carry.
Blake Schwarzenbach, Chris Bauermeister and Adam Pfahler cut the record at Radio Tokyo in Venice, California, producing it with Richard Andrews across roughly 60 hours of studio time. It first appeared on the small Shredder label, years before Dear You and the major-label drama, and it remains the rawest snapshot of a band whose influence on punk and emo songwriting still runs deep.
The title nods to the run of bad luck that dogged the trio early on, but the songs are anything but defeated. "Want" kicks the door in with gravel-throated urgency, while "Busy" pairs a driving riff with Schwarzenbach's knack for turning everyday frustration into lines worth scrawling on a notebook. "Seethruskin" and "Fine Day" show off the melodic instincts that would sharpen on later records, with Pfahler's drumming keeping everything on edge.
There is plenty of Descendents and Hüsker Dü in the DNA here, the hardcore speed tempered by melody and a writer who clearly reads more than most.
Fronted by that famous photo of Sammy the cat, this LP is the place to start for anyone tracing where heartfelt punk found its vocabulary.
