Jack White slipped No Name into the world in unmarked white sleeves, and the 2024 album that emerged is his rawest, loudest set in years.
His sixth solo album first surfaced as a mystery gift tucked into purchases at Third Man Records stores in Nashville, Detroit and London, before fans worked out who was behind it and a wider release followed. White wrote, recorded and produced the album himself at Third Man Studio in Nashville, with Olivia Jean and his daughter Scarlett chipping in on a few tracks, and the record strips away the experimental detours of his previous two albums in favour of the fuzz-soaked garage blues that first made him famous.
Old Scratch Blues opens with a riff that sounds like it was dragged through a swamp, while That's How I'm Feeling struts on a hook made for shouting along. Archbishop Harold Holmes and Bombing Out keep the energy feral and the tempos unpredictable. Throughout, White's guitar tone is gloriously ugly in the best sense, and the drums hit like a slammed door.
Comparisons to his earliest records are inevitable, and for once they are entirely a compliment. No Name is a thrillingly back-to-basics blast that sounds best with the volume knob turned well past sensible.
