On Jackman., Jack Harlow strips things down to soulful loops and pointed self-examination, and this indie-store exclusive comes pressed on tan vinyl.
Released in 2023 with barely two days' warning, his third album took its title from his given first name and its cover from an alley in Louisville's Highlands neighbourhood. After a run of glossy crossover hits, Harlow pulled the focus inward, co-producing alongside FnZ, DJ Dahi and Boi-1da and keeping the arrangements lean. Critics heard echoes of classic boom-bap, and the album went on to top Billboard's rap albums chart.
Common Ground sets the tone, with Harlow examining how some white fans treat hip-hop culture as something to borrow without understanding. They Don't Love It, the lead single, flips into confident bravado, while Gang Gang Gang tells a chilling story of how the closest people in your life can grow into the worst versions of themselves. Denver also earned its own music video. Elsewhere he turns to fame and to the pressures of masculinity handed down through generations.
It is a tightly focused record that rewards close listening rather than background play.
For fans who only know the radio hits, Jackman. is the album that shows what Harlow sounds like when he is talking straight, with nothing to prove but the bars themselves.
