Israel Vibration's Vibes Alive! puts reggae's most remarkable harmony trio on a Santa Cruz stage in 1991, and this edition spreads the set across two LPs.
Cecil "Skelly" Spence, Lascelle "Wiss" Bulgin and Albert "Apple" Craig first met as children at a Kingston rehabilitation clinic, all survivors of polio, and went on to become one of roots reggae's most beloved vocal groups. By the early 1990s they were riding a strong run of albums for RAS, and the stage was where those songs truly came alive. Recorded in California and first released in 1992, this set captures the trio in peak form in front of a live audience.
The three voices are the whole show, trading lead lines and locking into tight harmonies over a rolling, bass-heavy band. Vultures and Racial Discrimination carry the sharp-eyed social commentary that runs through their catalogue, while Greedy Dog takes aim at avarice with a knowing bite. Cool and Calm, one of their best-loved songs, eases into a warm, swaying groove that lets the harmonies breathe.
Apple and Skelly have both since passed, which gives these performances extra weight for longtime listeners.
For anyone building a roots reggae shelf, this is a vivid, joyful document of a group that turned hardship into some of the most uplifting music Jamaica has produced.
