Unconquered People is roots reggae with a spine of steel, the second album from Israel Vibration, back in a limited deluxe edition on green vinyl.
The story behind the trio is remarkable. Lascelle 'Wiss' Bulgin, Albert 'Apple Gabriel' Craig and Cecil 'Skelly' Spence met as children at a rehabilitation clinic in Kingston, all survivors of the polio epidemic that swept Jamaica in the 1950s. Reunited years later as young Rastafarians, they sang on the streets before their debut, The Same Song, found success far beyond the island. This follow-up, issued in the UK by Harvest, built on that breakthrough.
Backed by players including members of the Wailers band, among them bassist Aston 'Family Man' Barrett, the three voices weave together in that unmistakable, slightly raw harmony that made them so distinctive. The title track stands as a proud declaration of endurance, Mr. Taxman turns everyday hardship into pointed protest, and Give I Grace and Survive carry the deep spiritual conviction at the heart of their music.
For roots reggae fans, this is an essential chapter from one of the genre's most inspiring groups. The rhythms are heavy and the message is clear, and the faith carried in every one of those three-part harmonies is impossible to miss.
