Three harmony singers who met as children recovering from polio, Israel Vibration had been making roots reggae of rare conviction for fifteen years by the time IV arrived in 1993.
Cecil 'Skelly' Spence, Albert 'Apple Gabriel' Craig and Lascelle 'Wiss' Bulgin first crossed paths at a rehabilitation clinic in Jamaica, and their music never lost that sense of hard-won survival. After a long gap between albums in the eighties, the trio found a second wind on the RAS label, releasing a steady run of records into the nineties. IV belongs to that fertile stretch, and it is the sound of a group comfortable in its strengths, with all three original voices still together.
The rhythms are heavy and unhurried, built for long nights and big speakers, with those three voices weaving around each other in a distinctive, slightly raw blend. Falling Angel has a mournful sway, while Hard Times speaks plainly about struggle without losing its melodic lift. Naw Give Up the Fight is pure Rasta resilience set to a rolling groove, and Thank You Jah offers a heartfelt note of gratitude.
The lyrics stay rooted in faith and endurance, sung by people who had lived every word.
