Sam Beam stepped out of the bedroom on Woman King, the 2005 Iron & Wine EP that wraps his hushed voice in fuller, stranger and more rhythmic arrangements.
Beam had won listeners over with the whispered home recordings of The Creek Drank the Cradle and the gentle studio polish of Our Endless Numbered Days. Recorded in 2004 with producer Brian Deck and released by Sub Pop, these six songs point toward the richer, more adventurous direction of the albums that followed, with electric guitar, percussion and layered textures creeping in at the edges.
The songs circle around women from scripture and myth. The title track "Woman King" opens on a hypnotic, rolling pulse, "Jezebel" offers a tender, sorrowful portrait, and "Freedom Hangs Like Heaven" drifts by on a gentle, lilting melody. "Evening on the Ground (Lilith's Song)" closes things with a darker, more mysterious hum.
It's a short record, under half an hour, but it shows Beam growing bolder as an arranger while keeping the intimacy that made people fall for him in the first place.
For Iron & Wine fans, it's a quietly pivotal release, the moment the hush started to bloom, and on vinyl those warm, close-miked textures feel as near as a whisper across the room.
