Forty years on, Iron Maiden's Somewhere In Time returns on red vinyl, celebrating the album where they plugged in guitar synths and sent Eddie into the future.

Released in 1986 after the gruelling World Slavery Tour, it was Maiden's sixth studio album and their first to use guitar and bass synthesisers. Producer Martin Birch recorded the rhythm tracks at Compass Point in the Bahamas and the guitars and vocals in the Netherlands before mixing in New York, and Derek Riggs wrapped it all in a Blade Runner-style cityscape packed with nods to the band's history.

Adrian Smith steps forward as a songwriter here. Wasted Years, his reflective anthem about missing home on the road, is one of the band's most loved singles, and his Stranger In A Strange Land rides a heavy, mid-tempo stomp. Steve Harris answers with the crowd-baiting Heaven Can Wait and the sprawling history lesson of Alexander The Great.

The synth textures give the twin guitars a glossy, futuristic sheen without dulling their bite, and Bruce Dickinson sounds as commanding as ever.

Once seen as a bold left turn, it has long since settled in as a fan favourite, the bridge between Powerslave and Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son and a natural centrepiece for any Maiden shelf.
