Interpol's Antics took the dark, nervy post-punk of their debut and taught it to dance, and this pressing comes with an MP3 download.

Arriving in 2004, two years after Turn On the Bright Lights made the New Yorkers one of the defining bands of the city's guitar revival, the second album had a lot to live up to. Working again with producer Peter Katis, the band sharpened its hooks and loosened its shoulders without giving up the sharp suits or the shadowy atmosphere. The result is warmer and more direct than anything they had done before.

"Evil" is the obvious starting point, propelled by Carlos Dengler's melodic bassline and Paul Banks' unforgettable "Rosemary" refrain. "Slow Hands" is pure dance-floor menace, all clipped guitars and insistent hi-hats, while "C'mere" offers a rare moment of yearning, almost pop sweetness. Opener "Next Exit" sets the mood with a slow, churchy organ before Daniel Kessler's guitar slides in.

Even "Narc" finds a sly, swaggering groove that keeps it from sinking into gloom.

Two decades on, Antics still sounds like the moment Interpol discovered they could be brooding and genuinely catchy at once. It remains a high point of 2000s indie rock and a natural partner for its celebrated predecessor on any shelf.
