Incubus slowed everything down on If Not Now, When?, and this 180-gram black double vinyl import from Holland gives the band's most patient album the space it needs.

Released in 2011, it was their seventh studio album and the first in five years. The gap had been put to good use: guitarist Mike Einziger studied music at Harvard, Brandon Boyd made a solo record, and the band regrouped with a calmer, more reflective outlook. Brendan O'Brien produced, steering them away from the tightly wound riffing of earlier records toward warm textures and open space.

The title track sets the mood, Boyd's voice floating over soft, shimmering guitar, closer to late-night pop than alternative rock. Promises, Promises builds around a gentle piano figure and one of his most tender melodies, while Adolescents brings back some urgency with a driving rhythm and a soaring chorus. Elsewhere the songs unfold slowly, favouring atmosphere and subtle shifts over big riffs.

It divided some fans who missed the bite of Make Yourself or Morning View, yet it has aged into a favourite for listeners who prefer Incubus at their most melodic. Spread across four sides of heavyweight vinyl, it rewards a quiet room and an unhurried listen, the way it was clearly meant to be heard.
