Incubus came back with sharpened elbows on 8, their 2017 album, pressed here on 180-gram black vinyl and imported from Holland.

Arriving six years after If Not Now, When?, the record found Brandon Boyd, Mike Einziger, José Pasillas, Ben Kenney and DJ Kilmore leaning back into loud guitars and big, buoyant choruses. It also turned out to be the last studio album with Kenney on bass, which gives it an extra place in the band's story.

The sessions began with producer Dave Sardy before Skrillex, a close friend of the band, stepped in late to re-produce and mix, and his ear for punch and space runs all through the finished record. "Nimble Bastard" bursts out with a wiry riff and a grin, while "No Fun" crackles with restless energy and one of Boyd's most immediate hooks.

Elsewhere, "Loneliest" slows things into a moody, late-night glow that shows how far the band's palette still stretched. Boyd's lyrics keep circling technology and the noise of modern life, and Einziger's guitar tones jump from crunchy to shimmering, sometimes within a single verse.

For longtime fans, it proves Incubus never lost their knack for pairing muscle with melody, and on heavyweight vinyl those guitars hit with real weight.
