Ice Nine Kills sharpened their horror-movie theatrics into something genuinely vicious on The Predator Becomes the Prey, the 2014 album now back on clear blue vinyl.

Before The Silver Scream turned them into metalcore's favourite slasher-flick storytellers, the Boston band were building that identity piece by piece. This third full-length marked a turning point, with frontman Spencer Charnas leaning hard into dark, narrative songwriting and guitarist Justin DeBlieck stacking riffs, synths and huge clean hooks on top of one another. Steve Sopchak produced the record at The Square Studio in Syracuse, giving it a punchy, modern sheen that still hits hard.

"The Coffin Is Moving" is a gleefully morbid standout, all lurching breakdowns and theatrical menace. "Let's Bury the Hatchet...In Your Head" earns its title with a chorus as catchy as it is murderous, while "What I Never Learned In Study Hall" brings in Tyler Carter of Issues for a soaring guest vocal. "The Power In Belief" opens the album with a real charge.

The record balances brutality and melody with confidence, and you can hear the blueprint for everything the band would go on to build.

For fans who discovered Ice Nine Kills through their later horror concept albums, this is the moment the knife really started to gleam.
