Howlin' Wolf's self-titled album, the one blues fans call the Rockin' Chair album, gathers some of the most menacing records Chess ever released, here on clear vinyl.

Released in 1962, it collects a run of singles cut in Chicago in the late fifties and early sixties, most of them written by Willie Dixon, who also played bass. Hubert Sumlin's jagged, unpredictable guitar slices through nearly every track, and Wolf's voice sounds like gravel being dragged across a tin roof.

Spoonful is a slow, hypnotic grind about appetite in every sense, Back Door Man struts with outlaw swagger, and Wang Dang Doodle throws a rowdy party that never wants to end. Shake For Me opens the record with a loose, rolling groove that sets the tone for everything that follows.

Cream and the Doors both built famous covers on songs from this record, and generations of guitarists have studied Sumlin's lines note for note. The playing is raw and economical, with the band leaving plenty of space for Wolf to fill with growls, moans and that towering presence.

It remains one of the cornerstones of Chicago blues, the kind of record that explains where so much of rock and roll came from, and it still sounds dangerous.
