Hot Mulligan's you'll be fine returns as a colored vinyl reissue, bringing the Michigan emo band's frantic, fiercely heartfelt 2020 album back to the shelves.
Hailing from Lansing, the band had already turned heads with their debut Pilot, but this second full-length is where everything clicked. Twin guitars tangle and spiral in true Midwest emo fashion, Tades Sanville screams and sings as if every feeling arrived at once, and the song titles are proudly, gloriously ridiculous, which is half the fun.
"Feal Like Crab" is the anthem, jittery and huge, with a chorus that practically demands a crowd to shout it back. "Green Squirrel In Pretty Bad Shape" and "Dirty Office Bongos" pair absurd names with deeply sincere, often painfully honest lyrics, while "We're Gonna Make It To Kilby!" is every bit as wired and cathartic as its title suggests.
Underneath the jokes there is real craft, with tight, mathy riffs and dynamics that lurch from whisper to roar without warning.
It is a record that understands how ridiculous and how serious your twenties can feel at the same time, and it still hits like a group hug in a sweaty basement. A worthy addition for anyone who grew up on emo's louder side.
