Hot Mulligan unplug on Acoustic Vol. 1 + 2, a reissue that gathers the Michigan emo band's stripped-back sessions onto a single copper emerald colored LP.

Known for frantic, shout-along songs with some of the most gloriously ridiculous titles in modern emo, the band first released these acoustic sets in 2021 and 2022. Taking away the distortion and the speed shows just how sturdy the songwriting is underneath, and Tades Sanville's raw, cracking vocals still carry every ounce of their usual intensity.

Featuring Mark Hoppus becomes a tender, close-up confessional, and Pop Shuvit (Hall of Meat, Duh) trades its crunch for bright acoustic strumming without losing any of its bite. There is a heartfelt cover of Taking Back Sunday's MakeDamnSure, a nod to the emo lineage the band grew out of, and the set closes with Heem Wasn't There, a newer song that slots right in beside the reworked favorites.

Intimate and a little bittersweet, it is the sound of a band comfortable enough to show its soft underbelly, with room to hear every lyric that usually gets screamed back at them.

Fans who know these songs at full throttle will find a different kind of catharsis here, and the colored pressing makes a striking addition to the collection.
