Hard bop rarely sounds as relaxed and assured as it does on Horace Silver's The Stylings of Silver, now part of the Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series on 180-gram vinyl.

Released in 1957 as the follow-up to 6 Pieces of Silver, the album catches the pianist's quintet hitting a sweet spot. Art Farmer on trumpet and Hank Mobley on tenor saxophone front the band, with Teddy Kotick on bass and Louis Hayes on drums, and Silver's writing gives them plenty to chew on.

Five of the six tunes are Silver originals, and several became part of his enduring songbook. "No Smokin'" kicks things off with a crisp, swinging drive, "Soulville" settles into a bluesy, churchy groove, and "Home Cookin'" lives up to its name with down-home warmth. To close, Silver shows off his arranging chops on the standard "My One and Only Love," a tender finish after all that heat. Mobley and Farmer trade ideas with an easy, conversational grace throughout.

Silver's gift for gospel-tinged melody and funky left-hand vamps helped define the Blue Note sound of the era, and this record shows why so many musicians studied his playbook. It is a proper slice of 1950s New York jazz, equally at home on a first spin or a hundredth.
