Shy Girl In Dub! hands Hollie Cook's 2025 album over to the mixing desk, a limited green vinyl pressing of a record built for big speakers and late nights.
Cook has been one of Britain's most distinctive reggae voices since her debut, describing her sound as tropical pop and blending lovers rock sweetness with roots and dub weight. Shy Girl, her fifth studio album, was produced by Ben McKone of General Roots, who also co-wrote and played on it, so it made sense for him to take the reins here too.
McKone remixed the original stems live on an analogue desk, improvising each version in real time, with some taking as many as 25 attempts before they felt right. The mixes were then mastered from tape by Josh Hahn, giving the whole thing a warm, physical punch.
The results are spacious and playful. "Shy Dub" sets the tone with fragments of Cook's voice floating through reverb and delay, while "Rockaway Dub" and "Night Dub" strip the songs back to drum, bass and echo. "Dub Operator" adds a sly bounce near the close.
It continues a fine tradition of dub companions in Cook's catalogue, and it stands as a rewarding listen in its own right for anyone who loves the craft of a great mix.
