Before the glossy hits came this: Pretty on the Inside, Hole's ferocious 1991 debut, back on 180-gram vinyl and every bit as abrasive as it was meant to be.
Courtney Love formed Hole in Los Angeles in 1989, and two years later the band cut this album at Music Box Studios in Hollywood with an inspired pair of producers, Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon and Don Fleming. Released on Caroline in the US, it is a world away from the sunlit polish Hole would find later, a howl of feedback, rage and dark humour that sits closer to noise rock than anything on the radio.
"Teenage Whore" comes in snarling and never really lets go, while "Babydoll" grinds through a slow, heavy menace. "Good Sister/Bad Sister" stretches out into something sprawling and unhinged, and the brief title track is a sharp shock of chaos. Closer "Clouds" borrows from Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides, Now", turning a folk standard into a bruised, ragged lament.
Eric Erlandson's guitars, Jill Emery's bass and Caroline Rue's drums give Love a wall of sound to tear into, and she does so without mercy.
It is raw and difficult in all the right ways, and essential for anyone who wants to hear where Hole's fire began.
