Courtney Love traded basement noise for California sunshine on Celebrity Skin, Hole's glossy, guitar-bright 1998 album, here pressed on 180-gram vinyl.
After the raw fury of Live Through This, Love wanted a record bound together by the West Coast, its glamour and its rot. Working with producer Michael Beinhorn, the band swapped grunge grime for widescreen alternative rock, and Billy Corgan joined the sessions as a songwriting collaborator, sharing credits on several songs including the title track. It became Hole's best-selling album, and their last before they split in 2002.
The title track kicks the door in with one of the great opening riffs of the decade, all sneer and sparkle, while "Malibu" glides on chiming guitars and a melody built for coastal highways. "Awful" hides real bite beneath a bubblegum chorus, and "Hit So Hard" turns bruised romance into something dreamy and dangerous. Eric Erlandson's shimmering lead guitar and Melissa Auf der Maur's bass and backing vocals give every song its polish.
Love wrote every lyric, and her lines here are some of her sharpest, mixing poetry, Hollywood cynicism and genuine heartache in the same breath.
Nearly three decades on, it still sounds like Hole at full brightness, and a heavyweight pressing gives those guitars all the room they need.
