M.C. Taylor has led the project for the better part of two decades from his base in Durham, North Carolina, building a catalogue of soulful, searching songs that sit somewhere between folk, country, gospel and roadhouse rock. Released on Merge Records, this set finds him turning toward the road, old friends and the strange work of making music for a living.
Opener "20 Years and a Nickel" sounds like a man counting the miles behind him and deciding the trip was worth it. "Shinbone" and the title track carry the album's brighter, more celebratory side, while "My Old Friends" leans into warmth and gratitude, exactly as its title suggests.
The band plays with easy confidence, all supple grooves, shimmering keys and guitars that know when to stay out of the way, and Taylor's voice stays weathered and kind throughout. Nothing feels rushed, and even the most reflective songs keep a gentle forward motion.
For anyone who loves The Band, J.J. Cale or late-night drives with the windows down, Jump for Joy is a generous, big-hearted listen that rewards repeat spins.
