Héctor Lavoe could make a whole dance floor feel like it was in on the secret, and ¡Qué Sentimiento! catches El Cantante de los Cantantes in fine voice, pressed here on heavyweight 180-gram vinyl.
Released in 1981 on Fania, the album arrived a year after El Sabio, with the singer from Ponce, Puerto Rico, firmly established as one of the brightest stars of the New York salsa scene. His voice was his calling card, a bright, nasal tenor full of humour and heartbreak, and he had an improviser's instinct for spinning a line into something unforgettable. Few singers could sound so effortless while carrying a full band on their shoulders.
Eight tracks keep the energy high. Amor Soñado opens the set on a romantic note, and Juventud rides the punchy horns and call-and-response choruses at the heart of the classic Fania sound. Soy Vagabundo lets Lavoe stretch out with the easy swagger of a natural storyteller, while Seguiré Mi Viaje feels like a statement of intent from a singer determined to keep moving forward, whatever the road ahead held.
For salsa lovers, it is a vivid reminder of why Lavoe's voice still fills dance halls decades later, and a welcome addition to any Fania collection.
