Bleak, enormous and impossibly intimate, Deathconsciousness is the cult double album that keeps finding new listeners, here on colored vinyl across two LPs with its accompanying booklet.
Released in 2008 by the duo of Dan Barrett and Tim Macuga, it was recorded at home over roughly five years on a shoestring budget, using a laptop microphone, a secondhand keyboard and a toy piano. Little noticed at first, it spread through internet forums and music communities until it became a rite of passage for fans of shoegaze, post-punk and anything drenched in reverb and dread, long before anyone thought to call it a classic.
"A Quick One Before the Eternal Worm Devours Connecticut" opens as a slow, droning hymn before "Bloodhail" lifts off with an almost anthemic ache. "The Big Gloom" lives up to its name, and "Earthmover" closes the set with a monumental, crushing finale that feels like the end of the world played very slowly.
The booklet expands the concept with a fictional religious history, deepening the record's obsession with mortality, faith and alienation and rewarding anyone who reads along.
It is not an easy listen, and it was never meant to be, but few records reward patience so completely, and this vinyl edition gives it the physical weight it always deserved.
