We Free Again is Groundation's fourth album, the record where a band of jazz musicians who'd wandered into reggae finally sounded like they belonged nowhere else.

By 2004 the strange origin story, Sonoma State jazz students led by Harrison Stafford deciding to make roots reggae instead, had stopped being a curiosity and become a genuine style. This album is where that coherence really locks in, horn arrangements and extended jazz harmony folded into the one-drop so naturally that the two influences stop sounding like separate ingredients. Reggae veterans Apple Gabriel and Don Carlos both appear, adding a lineage the band had clearly earned by this point rather than borrowed.

The title track carries the album's emotional core, Apple Gabriel and Don Carlos trading lines over a rhythm that builds with real patience. Wish Them Well is the record's gentlest moment, generous rather than sentimental, Praising lets the horn section stretch out with genuine jazz improvisation before settling back into the groove, and Dem Rise closes with the kind of slow-gathering momentum that made Groundation's live shows so highly regarded.

A joyful record from a band that had, by this point, stopped needing to explain what they were doing and simply got on with doing it.
