Goodbye Country (Hello Nightclub) is Groove Armada's third album, and the title alone tells you what happened, a duo who'd built their reputation on downtempo, chilled electronica deciding to make a record built for the actual dancefloor instead.

Following the more introspective Vertigo, Andy Cato and Tom Findlay leaned hard into upbeat, genre-hopping club music here, pulling in guests as varied as folk legend Richie Havens, disco architect Nile Rodgers, and rapper Jeru the Damaja, a combination that shouldn't cohere on paper and somehow does across the record's sprawling, near seventy-five minute runtime. Released in 2001, it pushed the duo toward UK platinum status and remains their most purely eclectic statement, house, hip hop, disco-funk, and left-field production all treated as compatible rather than competing genres.

Superstylin' is the certified banger everyone remembers, that dubby bassline and rasta-inflected vocal hook turning into one of the era's most inescapable club records. My Friend carries a slyer, funkier groove, less immediate but arguably more durable. Suntoucher opens the record on a warm, sun-drenched note before the tempo properly kicks in, and Raisin' the Stakes closes things with genuine dancefloor urgency.

A three-hour journey through clubland's many moods, compressed into one record. Groove Armada never made anything quite this ambitious again.
